Illustrative colours, not measured transmission or product availability. Actual photochromic colour and activation depend on product, UV exposure and temperature; some products retain an indoor tint. Confirm colour/material combinations with Labolux.

Automatic thickness checks both the center and the thinnest edge. You may increase it; lower values are corrected to the simulator minimum. Mounting limits are illustrative presets, not a manufacturing approval.

How this estimate works

Automatic mode uses an educational single-vision paraxial model. Custom mode uses spherical front and biconic rear sagittae with nominal thin-lens principal surface powers. Front base uses lens-clock 1.530 convention (radius = 530/base mm); material index changes its actual power. Radius/aperture checks reject unsupported surface geometry and flat/convex rear meridians. Custom thickness is recalculated from sampled sagittae. This remains an approximation: thickness-adjusted back-vertex power, aspheric optimization, optical performance and manufacturer blank availability are not validated. A feasible result is not a manufacturability guarantee. Thickness at a point = optical-center thickness minus [sphere × u² + (sphere + cylinder) × v²] / [2000 × (index − 1)], with distances in mm. Cylinder axes are mapped in front view. The lens-only mode is centered; frame mode uses monocular PD and HT to decenter each optical center within the aperture.

Simulator center floors: 2.0 mm for 1.50/1.56, 1.5 mm for higher indices. Edge floors: 1.0 mm full rim, 1.8 mm nylon, 2.2 mm rimless. The aperture interior and edge are sampled to set each recommendation, rounded up to 0.1 mm. User overrides can increase center thickness but cannot go below the calculated recommendation. Rx, index, frame, fitting or dimension changes restore automatic thickness. Index comparisons apply each eye’s additional thickness above each material’s own minimum.

Lens-only mode can optimize for diameter or cut down an 80 mm lens without changing its original center thickness. Frame mode optimizes separately for each fitted shape; diameter controls do not apply. The illustrative front curve adapts to the strongest principal power so the back stays concave in both meridians (meniscus form). This is a visual approximation, not a laboratory base-curve calculation. Bevel position, wrap and frame depths are illustrative. No progressive, prism, or vision-through-the-lens simulation is calculated. Actual thickness and mounting suitability require laboratory confirmation. Calculations run in your browser. All seven generic frame models were created for this simulator; they do not represent a manufacturer’s frame. Colours are illustrative and not transmission measurements.

Make it thinner
